Cloud & Lysistrata depicts a toddler, safe in the care of his seated, contemplative mother. The theme of motherhood is one that evolved and continued from his earliest works through his last epic 40’ bas relief Rising. In this epic relief which is currently housed in the Waddell Studio, a grouping of women fold in protectively around a mother holding a child. In the grouping, Circle of Womanhood, formerly at the Sedona Cultural Park, a strong woman sits cross legged, her young son sits on her lap, his hand resting under her chin, as if in accord with her proud forward gaze. Other figures and paintings depict women in various phases of pregnancy and the tender early years of maternal protection and guidance.
