Fine Art Museum of Sedona Announces Comprehensive Retrospective: "Curt Walters: A Lifetime of Art"

Dual-Venue Exhibition Celebrating the Renowned Impressionist Runs September 4 through October 28 at Mary Fisher and September 1 through November 30 at the Heritage

SEDONA, Ariz. — The Fine Art Museum of Sedona (FAMoS) is proud to present "Curt Walters: A Lifetime of Art," a landmark retrospective honoring one of America’s premier Plein Air and landscape painters. Spanning over five decades of creative mastery, the exhibition will run from September 4 through October 28, hosted across two key Sedona cultural landmarks: the Sedona Heritage Museum and the Mary D. Fisher Fine Art Complex.

Widely acclaimed as the "Grand Canyon Artist of the Century," Curt Walters is celebrated for his vibrant color palettes, mastery of light, and deep environmental advocacy. This dual-venue retrospective offers visitors an unprecedented look into Walters’ artistic evolution, featuring iconic Southwest landforms, international plein-air studies, and previously unreleased private collection works. This is Curt’s first exhibition in Sedona since 1989 – a true homecoming!

Exhibition Highlights Across Two Locations

To capture the full scope of Walters’ prolific career, FAMoS has structured the retrospective across two complementary venues:

• The Sedona Heritage Museum (Historical Roots & Southwestern Landscapes):

This venue focuses on Walters' early career and his deep connection to the American Southwest. Key works highlight his decades-long dedication to capturing the shifting light, dramatic topography, and geological splendor of the Grand Canyon and Sedona’s iconic red rocks.

• The Mary D. Fisher Fine Art Complex (Global Visions & Contemporary Works):

This space showcases Walters’ expansive international travels—including plein-air studies from Europe, and Asia—alongside large-scale studio canvases, technical sketches, and works reflecting his active role in environmental conservation.

"Curt Walters’ brushwork captures more than just scenery—it captures the spirit and atmosphere of the American West," said the Board Chair of FAMoS. "By partnering across two iconic Sedona venues, we are able to present the full breadth of his extraordinary artistic journey to locals and art enthusiasts from around the world."

• Opening Reception at the Mary Fisher: Friday, September 4 (5 to 8 pm)

• Opening Reception at the Heritage*: Friday, September 18 (5 to 8 pm)

• First Friday at the Mary Fisher*: Friday, October 2 (5 to 8 pm)

• *The documentary “Curt: A Lifetime of Art” will be shown

• The award-winning book, “Resilience: The Life History and Grand Canyon Art of Curt Walters,” will be available for purchase and signing at all events

About Curt Walters

Born in New Mexico and based in Sedona for over forty years, Curt Walters has earned worldwide acclaim for his impressionistic renditions of natural landscapes. His work has been exhibited at major museums nationwide, including the Eiteljorg Museum, the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum, and the Autry Museum of the American West. Beyond his artistic achievements, Walters has been a passionate advocate for air quality and preservation efforts at the Grand Canyon.
