Mastery in Motion
Sedona-based artists Jill Trenholm and the late John Soderberg. At its core, Mastery in Motion represents the continuous flow of artistic knowledge. Jill Trenholm is famously known in Sedona as John Soderberg’s protégé. She studied under him, mastered the bronze creation process through his mentorship, and was even trusted by Soderberg to reproduce his iconic Merlin sculpture before he passed.

The Fine Art Museum of Sedona (FAMoS) is proud to announce the opening of Mastery in Motion.
“Mastery in Motion” celebrates both the enduring legacy of Master Sculptor John Soderberg and the artistic evolution of his protégé, Jill Trenholm.Known for his extraordinary ability to make bronze appear fluid, emotional, and alive, Soderberg created sculptures filled with movement, grace, and human spirit. Through years of close mentorship, he passed his sculpting techniques and philosophy on to Trenholm, trusting her not only with his methods but also with the continuation of his artistic legacy.

Today, that mastery remains in motion.
While honoring the foundation Soderberg provided, Trenholm has developed her own distinct artistic voice, blending humanity, nature, symbolism, and emotional storytelling into her bronze work. Beginning her artistic journey sculpting collectible figurines and creating whimsical assemblage art, Trenholm gradually evolved toward sculpting clay for bronze, where she found a deeper connection to expressive figurative work and monumental storytelling. Her evolving body of work now includes intimate figurative sculptures as well as larger monument concepts designed to inspire love, connection, unity, and awareness.
Alongside creating her own sculptures, Trenholm now teaches many of the techniques and artistic principles passed down to her by Soderberg, helping preserve and carry forward this tradition of mastery for future generations of artists.
Together, their sculptures reflect both continuity and transformation — a shared mastery expressed through two unique artistic visions.
“Mastery in Motion” is ultimately about more than movement within sculpture. It is about the movement of knowledge, inspiration, mentorship, and artistic evolution carried from one generation to the next.
The Fine Art Museum of Sedona has also pieces located from the late John Soderberg at various locations around Sedona. One place that would like you to stop by and see his work is Sedonya Conscious Living Center.
