Franklin Fireshaker was a Ponca artist touted as a student of Ponca history and customs. He became an authority on Indian dances and was a frequent judge at tribal dance contests. Fireshaker's paintings were known to have depicted traditions, legends and rituals of the Ponca tribe. His work is included in the permanent collection of the Gilcrease Museum as well as the Philbrook Art Center. This painting depicts the rituals of the Native American Church.
